Types Of The Second Movie In Line

Even though the title of the blog is very much misleading, we are going to classify/de-classify the types of "the second movie in line". That is the word I could come up with after googling for 50 minutes. Just to be on same page, the later film can be a sequel/prequel (in broader sense); we are not talking about the movie timeline here, but of the release dates.

First, let me clarify why I am not using the word "sequel"/"prequel". It was just to show off that I have a very unique and deeper perspective on these things. It is like the snobbery* that makes me feel if you are different than the mass, you are the class. The anti-thesis of this funda is quite complicated. That says, if all around you start to love anti-establishment flick, then you have to keep faith on stereotypes. Anyways, I am losing my track here already, so coming back to the point. Another reason why I am not using the words is that I did not get proper understanding of it from Wikipedia/blogs. So just keep some patience with my awesome english and accept the longer phrase instead of sequel/prequel.

Now, the list. I am from a pseudo-creative field and having a bad habit of bulletting points. Believe me, that works if you want to convince somebody with lame justifications. So, here it is

  -  Pure Continuation : Like story goes. And it does not have the burden to have the same template. Rare examples are "Bhootnath" or "Indiana Jones" series. It is very rare because when the first film goes well, people will like to see the similar storyline. I am not sure if we can put "Gremlins" into that because even though they have switched genre, the story template was same. Films like "GooGaBaBa" is also a continuation of the protagonists' life but, as I have mentioned above, filmmakers followed the templates shamelessly everywhere. So let us not put those in this 'Pure' section.

  -  Thematic Sequel/Prequel : All new Indian film series like "Jannat" or "Blood and Cornetto". It features similar characters (most of the time, with same actor/actress in lead role/s) and similar crisis/resolution script. Bloggers and pretentious folks call it "Spiritual Sequel/Prequel" .

  -  Spin Off : Like "S. Darko" or "Scorpion King", the later movie will surround upon another character (non-Lead side Role) form the first. It is like if somebody is making a movie on "Sher Khan" or "Raghunandandas Govardhandas Vaghawle". Again, not sure if we can call "Tere Bin Laden : Dead Or Alive" a spin off as there was no concept of the director charcater i.e. Manish Paul in "Tere Bin Laden". Actually the so-called new-age indian filmmakers can think about it. As per the market research, those would be instant hits.

  -  Crossover : That is more frequent in kids movies e.g. "Freddy vs Jason" or "King Kong vs Godzilla". Even though this tren seems to be like inherited from comics culture, but on the same time, Japanese monster films were another pioneer for that. The driving force of this was developed purely based on money. Again, in India, I have not come across any movie like this. Once in 2013/2014, there was a movie released with both of the very famous local detectives Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi, named "Doorbeen". I have not watched that film, just heard those characters are kind of caricatures, not the original ones. So, not considering that kind in this part. The second question that might come to our mind is that are "Superman vs Batman" or "Civil War" crossovers. Firstly, if there is a book depicting the fictional ego clash between "Rahul" and "Prem", and somebody is making a film on it, that would be just an adaptation I guess. And yes, I heard there are comic books with these kind of duels (triels, quardrrrrels?!). Secondly, The industry of Comics-turned-Films are turning like Big 'n Large day by day and doing the filthiest experiments on the characters like those mad German and French Surgeons used to do during world wars. So I thought not to consider comic book adaptations in the section of crossovers. On the other hand, it might be my confusion.

  -  Combination Of pure continuation And thematic one : Almost all of the series made till today. The list of the films that I was trying to ignore in last few categories. From "Pirates of the Caribbean" to "Ishqiya". Actually, if made properly, these can be called as "Sequels"/"Prequels". The main point of smooth escalation is that the characters are same. Secondly, people will not get any unexpected push (unlike why everybody hated "Talaash") and everybody will get their share. Nothing to explain. Very textbook concept, very hard to follow (i.e. making properly) and very simple.

  -  Spoof : Caricature of the original story. example, "Ghoom" or "A Haunted House".

  -  Munnabhai Scenario : As it is written, I do not know any other example of this kind of series anywhere else. It is more like a Type 2 than Type 1, but somehow the lead characters (with names) will be intact. So, the characters are similar, crisis is different and will be handled in similar way - but there characters would be different also and there will be no remembrance of the previous occurrences.

  -  Mockbusters : These are just like legal and illegal sons of those British-era Landlords. Both got the same storyline, but one will be more shining because of the production house. Like, for "Sholay", there was "Ramgarh ke Sholay" and for "Transformers", there was "Transmorphers". These are not actually the "second movie in line", but same movie in a row. In wikipedia, a simplified explanation is given - ".. movie created with the intention of piggy-backing on the publicity of a major movie with a similar title or subject or both. Mockbusters are often made with a low budget.. A mockbuster may be similar enough in title, packaging, etc. that consumers confuse it with the mainstream film it mimics, but their producers maintain that they are simply offering additional products for consumers who want to watch additional films in the same subgenres.". The production company "The Asylum" is entirely based on these kind of products. Sometimes big houses will do that and got stuck in legal issues to have fun. For example, "Armageddon"-"The Core", "A Bug's Life"-"Ants" etc.

  -  Intended Split : Like "Kill Bill" or "Gangs of Wasseypur" series. Because the directors are too dull to compact the story in 90 minutes, they have started this genre (?!). Goes very well with South Korean revenge sagas where in the first part they will show the crisis and left you hanging and one the second, it will try to resolve it. In our childhood days, there used to be a programme telecasted on TV called "Chhuti Chhuti". There, along with other fun shows, a movie was shown up split in 3-4 episodes. Nothing different here. Next one that we are waiting for is "Bahubali" :)

  -  Name Series : For some unknown reason, People like Yash Johar, Mehmood, Bhanu Banerjee, Jahar Roy and Sunny Leone appeared in many films with their original names, played the characters what they are (or wanted to be). This is just not because of their image over their work. If that was the reason, Salman/Shahrukh/Amir would have appeared every movies with their own names. And already I have crossed my limits to exaggerate the classification, let this be the last of the list.

Recently, we got to know that the people in Vishesh Films are planning for the "Raaz Reboot". Seriously, why?! The concept of reboot should be applicable for Type 1 I guess, not Type 2 like "Raaz" series. Anyways, Post-AnuDiba Bollywood can be portrayed as the pioneer for deconstructing form and content, let us watch the teaser meanwhile

The idea of this classification stroke when J J Abrams mentioned "10, Cloverfield Lane" as the "blood relative" of "Cloverfield". We started to think what is the base of the word-jugglery here?! This classification is based on the point of view of the audience. There might be a different look (and there is) for that which can show how "the second movie in line" or its concept is getting developed. For that, I just went through a very nice and detailed blog with very apt examples in http://whatculture.com/film/6-basic-types-of-film-sequels.
